Making Electrolysis More Comfortable

So let's be honest here, not everyone finds electrolysis comfortable, with some clients needing a little extra help to manage comfort levels during their treatments.

Clients have electrolysis for many reasons due to hormonal imbalances such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Transgender, Pre GRS. Regardless of the reason it is important to make sure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.

Below are some tips to help you with different options.

Please remember that I am unable to prescribe or administer and can only advise on the types of products that can be used to help you during a course of electrolysis.

Please consult your GP before taking any medication if necessary.

1) Anti-histamines

These help to manage the skin reaction you may have after your treatment.

Take them on the morning of your treatment and for a few days afterwards.

2) Pain killers

No blood thinning painkillers such as aspirin as this can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of bleeding.

You could use painkillers with anti-inflammatory benefits to help with the skin reaction you may have. These need to be taken before your treatment as per the instructions provided in the medication box.

3) Numbing treatments.

LMX 4 – Thick white cream Apply thickly 30 -40 mins before treatment Amazon?

Emla – Thick white cream Apply thickly 40 – 60 mins before treatment Pharmacy / Amazon?

Ethyl Chloride -Spray 30 seconds sprayed directly on to skin Pharmacy/tattoo companies/amazon. Feels very cold

Ametop - cream Apply thickly 30 – 45 mins pre-treatment              Pharmacy

Instant numb ( lidocaine 5% ), Like Vaseline 3-5 mins easy to use

Tag 45 No specific time try 20 mins

DOTC. Blue Anywhere from 10 minutes to 60 minutes depending on skin thickness

Anestop 20 – 30 mins Occluded.

Tattoo numbing cream   As the name suggests it is often used by customers having tattoos and Can be found on Amazon can take up to an hour to gain full effect.

Please note that I do not know these products specifically and can not recommend any specific ones.

Everyone is different and the effects of these products may vary depending on the person trying them. It is basically a case of trying and seeing what works best for you as an individual.

I do know that from my client’s experience Emla is hit and miss re efficacy but those clients that use it despite this would not go without it.

When purchasing any products to help during your electrolysis treatments make sure you buy from a reputable company and the product is genuine.

If you know of any products that you have used successfully let me know and I can add them to the list.

Other things you can do to help your treatment go well.

Hydrate your skin with a moisturiser – hydration is important so we can use and insert the right probe size. This reduces the length of time the current is on and the intensity level.

 Exfoliation

Best done the day before your treatment. Exfoliation helps to lift off excess dead skin cells and debris and helps to minimise ingrowing hairs.

Aftercare treatment – remember to use aftercare after your treatment to aid healing – If the skin hasn’t healed properly we will have to delay treatments until it is. This slows down your progress and delays the end result…. Being free of unwanted hair.
